So, you've decided it's time for that annual family photoshoot. You envision picturesque scenes of laughter, perfectly coordinated outfits, and smiles that could rival a toothpaste commercial 🤣 But reality hits hard when you remember you've got kids. Cue the chaos!

Here's my best tips to survive the beautifully chaotic experience of family photoshoots - oooops, I mean, family adventures!

Step 1: Selecting Outfits

You've scoured Pinterest for hours, searching for the perfect family outfit inspiration. You settle on a colour scheme that screams "coordinated chaos." Tip: Let your kids have a say in their outfits (within reason, of course). When they feel involved, they're more likely to cooperate. This is even more important if your kiddos have sensory differences. Please don't force them to wear something that they will feel uncomfortable in, it will show in the photos.

Step 2: Timing is Everything

You've strategically chosen the golden hour for your photoshoot. But your toddler has other plans. Tip: Plan for extra time before the shoot to handle any last-minute emergencies or delays. Flexibility is key when dealing with kids! Also if you can try to squeeze in a late nap just before the session. Or even better, book in Autumn/Winter when the days are shorter and you can be home in your PJS Netflix

and chilling by 7pm.

Step 3: Bribery Tactics

You've armed yourself with an arsenal of snacks and promises of post-photoshoot treats. But somehow, bribery backfires as your child morphs into a hangry tornado. Tip: Opt for non-messy, quiet snacks like fruit pouches, string cheese or crackers to keep energy levels up without the mess.

Step 4: Poses and Promises

You've briefed your kids on the importance of cooperation and smiling for the camera. But when the moment arrives, they transform into contortionists. Tip: Keep the mood light and fun by playing games like Simon Says or have a silly face contest, who can run the fastest, ask who did the pop off to get giggles (if your kids are that way inclined), literally anything to keep it lighthearted. Dad I am looking at you to keep up the charade too.

Step 5: Embrace Imperfection

Despite the mayhem, amidst the picking nose shots and goofy faces, there's a beauty in the chaos. Tip: Embrace the imperfections and go with the flow. Some of the best photos are the ones that capture genuine moments of joy and laughter which you don't often notice as a stand0-out moment during the session.

Step 6: Go with the flow and let them

No matter how meticulously you plan, there will always be surprises along the way. Whether it's a sudden rain shower, a wardrobe malfunction, or a massive meltdown, remember to go with the flow. Embrace the unpredictability of the moment and trust that sometimes the unplanned shots turn out to be the most memorable.

When it comes to your kids, embrace the 'let them' theory. Let them be themselves, let them explore, and let them express their true personalities. Unless it's a matter of safety, avoid imposing too many restrictions or expectations. Allow them to roam, play, and interact naturally with their surroundings. You'll be amazed at how genuine and authentic the resulting photos will be!

After all, it's these unexpected twists and letting your kids be themselves that make family adventures truly unforgettable!

So with that said, here's to embracing the imperfection, to cherishing the outtakes as much as the authentic, candid (not so candid IRL) shots, and to the memories that will last a lifetime. Because let's face it, family photoshoots with kids are never just about the pictures – they're about the unforgettable adventure along the way.
